Despite 18th- and 19th-century modifications, the monumental Cathedral of Carpi still retains the Renaissance style imparted on it by Alberto Pio, its founder. Designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi, it is perhaps the most important sacred building of the High Renaissance in the region: the plan traces, with some significant modifications, Bramante’s designs for the basilica of St. Peter’s in Rome.
Left unfinished upon the fall of the Pio seigniory, it was resumed in the Este era and completed only in the 18th century.
