The church of San Domenico’s proximity to the ducal residence earned it the role of court church, and as such it was often visited by the dukes of Modena and members of the court. Since its foundation, it has often been chosen as a burial place by the city’s most important families. Work on the construction of the ducal palace in the early 18th century resulted in the destruction of the medieval church.
The new temple, of grandiose proportions, was designed by the Bolognese architect Giuseppe Antonio Torri. The interior houses precious 18th-century altars and a terracotta group by Antonio Begarelli.
