The massive gateway is the only remnant of the fortified citadel, which was one of the jewels in the crown of the House of Este in Modena. A true counterbalance to the palace, it had assumed all the military and defensive functions that the latter had lost with the reconstruction by Francesco I. Construction of the Citadel began in 1635, possibly based on designs by Carlo di Castellamonte. Having lost its defensive function, it was completely dismantled after the Unification of Italy.
