Niccolò III
Today, the Rocca di Montefiorino, built above a hillside in the Modenese Apennines that dominates the valleys crossed by the Doro and Dragone streams, appears as a complex with a rectangular plan and central courtyard. The imposing shape of the original quadrangular tower is clearly recognisable, to which the Montecuccoli family added the buildings that enclose the western side of the fortress. The external façades of the fortress, pierced by small windows, feature compact stone walls further strengthened by embankments and strong buttresses at their base. A gateway terminating in a pointed arch built off-centre on the southern side marks the main entrance to the complex. The inner courtyard features porticoes on the ground floor and spacious loggias on the upper floor, with the exception of the western side, into which the austere outline of the ancient tower protrudes.
