Castello di Albinea
Francesco III
Albinea Castle, located on a hill in the foothills of Reggio near the Crostolo valley and surrounded by a beautiful park, is an evocative residential building which preserves some traces of its ancient military vocation. It is a building complex (today a private residence) that encloses an inner courtyard on three sides, with a portico on the lower side that opens to the south-east onto the surrounding park. At the north-western apex, a compact forepart crowned by corbels topped by battlements connected by arches extends beyond the line of the elevations adapted for residential use to provide support for a pitched roof. The entrance to the castle is near the north-western corner, where during the 19th century the structure of a crenellated gate-tower was rebuilt, equipped with a jutting structure and a drawbridge. The complex extends westwards through a wall circuit closed off at the summit by two cylindrical towers with a high scarp, perhaps a trace of the reinforcement work commissioned by the Este family in the second half of the 16th century.
