Description

The Abbey of Santa Maria di Marola was founded at the beginning of the 12th century at the behest of Matilde di Canossa. From the 15th century onwards, a period of decline followed an initial period of great prosperity and power. In 1824, the abbey was completely restored on the initiative of Duke Francesco IV d’Este and the Bishop of Reggio, Angelo Maria Ficarelli, and used as a mountain bishop’s seminary. As a result, the building has survived to this day and the interior of the church can be seen in its Romanesque form following a programme of restoration in the mid-20th century, in which the 18th-century decorations were removed.
