Acquedotto del Duca Borso d'Este / Canale del Duca Borso d'Este
Borso
Alfonso I
The interesting four-arch aqueduct that crosses the course of the Rio Bottazzo is the most conspicuous element of the artificial canal built by Duke Borso d’Este starting in 1462. The latter, in order to put an end to disputes between the families that ruled the lands surrounding the village of San Polo, the Canossa, Correggio and Contrari, decided to build a new canal, strictly under ducal control. The waters of the Enza were derived for agricultural purposes and for the operation of mills, but the course of the canal reached as far as Correggio: in this way, Borso guaranteed himself de facto control of the Correggio seigniory, which would continue until the first half of the 17th century.
