Description

The events of Soliera, located in the plain between Modena and Carpi, appear intimately linked to the Pio family, feudal lords of the House of Este. In the 15th century, they were responsible for the construction of the fortress erected at the south-eastern corner of the defensive perimeter of the town, close to the only access point.

Today, the castle has largely lost its military connotations, assuming the appearance of a stately home. It has a quadrangular masonry layout set on an escarpment base and composed of several buildings enclosing an inner courtyard on three sides, enclosed on the northern side by a recent building, not attributable to the castle architecture. The southern wing extends to the west as far as the gate-tower, which features a lowered arch portal and recesses that concealed the bolts used to manoeuvre the drawbridge (no longer existing); the top of the structure, covered with a hipped roof surmounted by a turret, displays the ancient crowning composed of dovetail battlements.
