From the 16th century, the ancient church of Santa Maria delle Assi was the seat of the Canons Regular of the Lateran, who sponsored its reconstruction at the end of the century to a design by the Bolognese architect Floriano Ambrosini. It houses precious relics, such as that of the Most Precious Blood, a gift from the Gonzaga family to the Este family.
