Description

The church of Saint Paul, which due to its proximity at the Ducal Court had the honour of serving as the parish church of the House of Este, it is visible today in its 16th-century guise, given to it by Alberto Schiatti after the earthquake of 1570. Its origins are even older, as evidenced by the traces of 14th- and 15th-century frescoes found on the medieval walls. The interior of the church, clearly of the Counter-Reformation, houses notable pictorial evidence of the 16th-century Ferrara school, with works by Scarsellino and Bastianino. The numerous burials of distinguished citizens of Ferrara have made it a real Pantheon for the city over the centuries.
