Description

The bishop’s palace, of early medieval origins, was enlarged and embellished for the first time at the end of the 15th century by the bishop Bonfrancesco Arlotti. Magnificently enlarged again in the 17th century by the bishop and cardinal Rinaldo d’Este, the palace can be read as the smaller-scale counterbalance to the ducal palace in Modena, commissioned by the bishop’s brother, Duke Francesco I. The two palaces share the same designer in Bartolomeo Avanzini.
