Description

In the area that is now Montagnole Park, a remarkable palace belonging to the Este family of San Martino stood until the late 18th century. A Matildic fortress, erected on the site of some prehistoric earthworks, passed to the Este family in the 14th century; at the end of the 16th century the ancient fortress was replaced by a modern palace surrounded by elegant formal gardens. The complex was completely demolished in the late 18th century.
