Description

The old church of San Paolo had been a parish church since the Middle Ages: it was not until 1491 that the nuns of the Monastero della Misericordia were transferred there and had the adjacent premises enlarged and the church rebuilt in 1653 under the direction of Galaverna. After the Napoleonic period, the monastery was converted into a boarding school for poor girls, founded by Francesco IV and under the patronage of Duchess Maria Beatrice of Savoy. Today, the complex hosts educational and cultural activities and the law library of the University of Modena.
