Description

This large building was commissioned by Francesco III to house Modena’s welfare institutions in a single modern location. The complex was built between 1753 and 1762 with a design attributed to Alfonso Torreggiani, and its long façade forms one of the backdrops that give the square its striking character. Enlarged in 1759, it was completed in 1774 with the addition of an elegant anatomical theatre. Home to Modena’s hospital until 2004, it is now awaiting general restoration.
