Description

The Palazzina della Montagna, with a rustic Mannerist flavour, was built between 1541 and 1542 by Terzo Terzi (or perhaps Girolamo da Carpi), at the behest of Ercole II d’Este. Also known as the Palazzina dei Bagni, it owes this name to the tradition that the interior featured bathrooms and a complex plumbing system, but nothing remains of these facilities, nor of the interior decorations. Converted into accommodation for the papal troops, it was reused from the 19th century onwards as a café, school and accommodation for evacuees. It now houses public offices.
