Castello di Querzola/ Castello di Querciola
Niccolò III
The history of Querciola Castle, built on a hilltop in the Reggio Emilia area, appears to have been linked since the late Middle Ages to the fortunes of the noble Fogliani family, vassals of the Este family from the first half of the 15th century. The fortified complex, which was already showing significant signs of degradation at the beginning of the 18th century, was at that time equipped with two watchtowers and other drawbridges.
The surviving structures of the castle layout have now been largely absorbed into the buildings that make up the village of Querciola. Of the fortress, the ruins of a circular keep and some traces at a rocky spur can be identified. A significant part of the complex appears to have become part of the former rectory where a 16th-century frieze painted by Lelio Orsi can be admired.
