The Cathedral of Reggio, the city’s greatest monument, appears right from its façade as a magnificent palimpsest of the various eras that have marked the history of the city.
Of early medieval origins, the cathedral was rebuilt for the first time in the 9th century and then again in the 12th century: the latter reconstruction still forms the supporting structure of the building today. Numerous traces of the frescoes that decorated it, including externally, can be viewed in the diocesan museum. Renovated in Renaissance style, from the 16th century it began to be enriched with precious canvases and refined sepulchral monuments, largely the work of Prospero Sogari.
