The Collegio San Carlo, established in 1626, was for centuries the most prestigious educational institution in Modena: open to young aristocrats from all over Italy, it provided all the teachings considered essential for the nobility. In 1682, the Studio Pubblico, the precursor to the modern University of Modena, was established within its walls. Bartolomeo Avanzini was responsible for the plans, later carried out by other architects, for the monumental church and the elegant portico on Via Emilia.
