Description

The hostel of San Pellegrino in Alpe, a solitary construction documented since the 11th century along the route connecting the plains and the Lucchesia area, was built around the burial place of two hermit saints, Pellegrino and Bianco, whose relics are still visible in the church and which rest with their heads in the ancient Duchy of Modena and their feet in the ancient Republic of Lucca. To honour the two saints, a monumental marble temple was built in 1462, the work of Matteo Civitali, a distinguished sculptor from Lucca. The adjoining hostel, which today retains much of its 15th-century structure, served as a place of refreshment and rest for travellers and pilgrims. Today, it houses a remarkable ethnographic collection. The nearby hotel was built in the 17th century by the Este family to provide an additional place of refuge on the Emilian side of the pass.
